Over the next few weeks I will publish a number of introductory blog posts about our new software "PRTG Network Monitor 7" which is currently undergoing a public beta test.

Let's begin with a short overview of what PRTG 7 is:

  • PRTG Network Monitor is a powerful network monitoring software for Windows suitable for small, medium and large networks and capable of LAN, WAN, WLAN, and VPN monitoring.
  • It combines all the features of PRTG 6 and IPCheck 5 with many new features
  • PRTG can be used to
    • monitor and alert for uptimes/downtimes or slow servers
    • monitor and account bandwidth and network device usage
    • classify network traffic by source/destination and content
    • discover unusual, suspicious or malicious activity of devices or users
    • control SLA agreements
    • discover and assess network devices
  • PRTG 7 supports up to several ten thousands of sensors (tested with up to 30.000 sensors) and can optionally work with multiple remote probes (="agents") for monitoring of multiple sites or network segments from one central core installation.
  • The software is based on Paessler's proven monitoring technology which has been constantly improved since 1997 and is already used by more than 100.000 users around the world every day.
  • The software is available as a small download (~30 MB) and easy to install: Initial setup of a monitoring station is possible in less than 5 minutes.
  • Attractive licensing packages from Freeware (up to 100 sensors) to enterprise level with thousands of sensors make sure that every user finds his solution.
