The 401(k) Company provides full-service administration and management services for mid- to large-sized retirement plans throughout the U.S.
Ryan Sheehan, an IT manager at The 401(k) Company, and his team wanted to replace their MRTG network-monitoring solution, which was too complex and time-consuming to use and not Windows based.
Sheehan's team operates in a mixed environment that includes Cisco hardware, Windows and UNIX servers. Their MRTG solution ran on a Linux box and was inherently limiting as most team members who managed it weren’t UNIX users. The MRTG solution made the team's networking-monitoring work labored and inefficient.
Sheehan said he and his team simply couldn't get the network-usage data they needed with the MRTG solution.
Sheehan searched Google for a replacement for his MRTG solution.
What he found was Paessler's PRTG Traffic Grapher. It was precisely the straightforward point-and-click, Windows-based solution that he'd wanted for his department.
Sheehan and his team can now post links with PRTG and easily tell if they're saturated, as well as identify network problems and usage history at a glance. They have experienced “great” interoperability with PRTG and can now see utilization on both LAN links and internal links.
Sheehan's IT team now has more time on its hands and can get more work done by using PRTG Traffic Grapher as its network-monitoring solution.
Today, for instance, the team can add a new monitor in “two seconds” with PRTG Traffic Grapher, while it took them “easily 30 minutes” to add a new monitor with the MRTG solution.
And Sheehan noted that the number of calls to the IT help desk has dropped “about 20%” since the team began using PRTG Traffic Grapher. Company wide, PRTG's centralized management capabilities have increased -- on a “huge” scale -- efficiencies for various business units at 401(k)'s satellite offices.
Sheehan added that the company's IT team is no longer chasing its tail, and he would “most definitely” recommend the PRTG Traffic Grapher to his peers.
